We're currently in Darjeeling, India & leaving tomorrow for Bhutan.
Today was our first day without a flight in a while! We left Aitutaki on Friday morning at 0830 and arrived here in Darjeeling at 1530 on Monday. Plenty of flights! And Ivan, thanx for the comments - we got them, and just to keep you interested, our recent flights we on the Saab 340 again, then a couple on 767s, one on a 747 and one on an A321.
The food in India is SO GOOD!! We had a dish with a cashew cardoman sauce last night that was just to die for!! Jackie had an idea that she wanted to celebrate our 150th (we each turn 50 and we each celebrate 25 years of marriage, so 75 + 75 =150!) by drinking a bottle of bubbly on each continent. Darjeeling is a hill station - it is a resort that is very, very popular with Indians who are trying to escape the heat - but it is near impossible to find anyplace that sells booze!! We finally found a wine store that had two different bottles of sparkling wine - both produced in India. We'll drink the one that we bought when we are in Bhutan. How bad could it be?!!
So we arranged a taxi for tomorrow morning at 0400, since we have to be at the airport at 0700. The airport is 80km away! When I googled this from home, Mr. Google maps said that it should take one hour to drive from the airport. Seemed reasonable to me. Took us 3 hours yesterday!! It will be much faster tomorrow with no traffic, but we don't want to take any chances with our Bhutan flight. Our driver told us that "during the season" i.e. in a month when the last of the monsoon rains end and it gets dry up here, the trip from Darjeeling to the neighbouring town of Ghum 8 km away can take 3 hours!!!!
We have been lucky with the weather - it is the end of monsoon, but we have had zero rain. This morning we got an splendid view of Kangchenjunga, the third tallest peak in the world.
Sorry, no pictures - no wifi at our resort, although it is truly amazing in every other aspect. Hopefully we can post something from Bhutan!
